Motherhood

She picks up the never ending to do list. Tiptoeing through the house before her family wakes, she pulls a sippy cup from one bed and quietly photographs one of the sleeping children. After a whirlwind of breakfast and dressing (neither of which she gets to do for herself), an embarrassment at the hands of the got-it-all-together mom and sending the family off to their day, she sits down with a few minutes to blog.

Sound like your life already?

Within the first few minutes of the movie Motherhood, starring Uma Thurman, I knew that I was going to totally relate to and love this movie. The movie takes all the insanity that a mom deals with, throws it into the pot together and dumps it all at once on the main character. I love that so many issues I can relate to are melded together in Motherhood.

While dealing with the "perfect parent", the snobby bystander, the obnoxious non-parents and everything else in her hectic day, I found it interesting and entirely "real" that the mother still judges other parents. It's a very true part of being a parent; judging and being judged. And often, judging yourself.

The overlying message and question of "What does motherhood mean to you?" and the balancing act of defining oneself apart from mere motherhood is a theme that I know will resonate with other moms.

Playground politics, money issues, blogging mistakes and losing one's identity are all things that can leave a mom feeling lost and maybe even a little desperate.

The thing is, being a mom doesn't have to mean you lose yourself and it doesn't have to mean you can't have passion and be passionate about things other than your children.

The two can coexist.

Yes, once a mom always a mom.

But, that doesn't have to mean that you can't be who you were before motherhood.

At least some version of it.

The struggle between those things is normal for moms to go through. Balancing one's former identity with the all-consuming identity of being a mom was portrayed in this movie wonderfully. I really enjoyed it and can definitely recommend it to others.

And, as my daughter smacks my face to get me to hurry up while I type this, I can smile and realize that I can be a mom and many other things.

I've just got to keep my humor about me.

You know, if it wasn't for Mama M., I wouldn't have blogged as much this week. She's been my own personal blogging cattle prod for the past few days! Ah, Mama M. This procrastinating, blank-mind-momma thanks you very much! Isn't it funny how my procrastinating tool (blogging) has suddenly become something that I procrastinate?!

But I digress. (Or am I procrastinating?)

It's Friday. And that can only mean one thing.

1. What's your guilty pleasure?

Let's get started before the sloppy joes are cold!

1. What's your guilty pleasure?

Food wise it's chips and dip. Specifically, tortilla chips and my special salsa dip. What's that? Only the greatest thing ever. A few scoops of the Mexican Chicken Tortilla canned soup, some sour cream, some salsa and a sprinkle of taco seasoning. Oh, droooooool.

My other guilty pleasure is watching episodes of The Hills online. Don't judge.

2. What is your favorite TV series?

Sopranos. Hands down. Wanna make somethin' of it?

Really though, there have been a lot of great series that I thoroughly loved every single episode in the series. Roseanne, Quantum Leap, Deadwood, Friends, Seinfeld and I'm sure there are more.

But

Nothing tops Sopranos. Not even Lost. And you all know how loopy I am for Lost!

3. Can you speak any foreign languages?

I can tell the buyer to beware in Latin and I can ask for a beer and the bathroom in Spanish.

I can say I love you in a few different languages.

Um, does that count as being able to "speak" a foreign language?

Didn't think so.

4. How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Wow. A lot. You know what? I'm actually going to go count right now........

Um, I didn't even realize I had that many pairs and I really hope that my hubby isn't reading my blog today! He'll never let me buy shoes again!!

5. What's your favorite kind of M&M's...peanut, almond, straight up regular, etc.?

Used to be peanut.

Until I tried the peanut butter and jelly ones. Oh. my. goodness. They are so good. So addictive. Really. Worse than crack.

10 Year Game

Alright, I guess Mama M. could sense that I was planning on procrastinating blogging until Friday. She tagged me in a little blog game! Alri-ight, I'll blo-og<that's my whiny voice>

So, rules seem simple enough.

1. Post where you want to be in 10 years.

2. Pass it on to ten bloggy friends.

Ok, phew. That is exhausting.

Now, in 10 years it will be March 2020.

I'll be >ahem< years old. Oh, alright. I'll be 39. But, not really. I made a pact with the devil ages ago and I will be staying 29 forever.

Hubby and I will be about to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary and, since 11 is our "number", I can only imagine that it will be a great anniversary.

Snappy will be 12 going on 13. Yikes. Triple Yikes! My dream is that we'll be as close then as we are now. I never imagined she'd be a "Mommy's Girl" and am loving that she is. I'm sure she'll be gorgeous and probably a dancer or cheerleader or something equally girly.

TRex will be months away from turning 16. That's insane. Oh, I hope he's better at driving a real car by that point than he is at his car driving video games right now.

I would venture to say that there will be at least one other child that will be anywhere from 1-10 years old. If hubby has his way, there will be more than one but, we'll see.

I would like to think that I'll be successful at something other than motherhood by that point. Heck, hopefully I'll be successful at motherhood by that point! I'd love if my boutique or blog (will there still be blogs then?) were really successful. I've always wanted to own a children's boutique storefront offline so, maybe that will happen.

We will have bought our home and done the renovations we dream of. Our home will be filled with laughter and love as it is now but, more so with all the friends that TRex and Snappy will always have here.

I'd love if 10 years from now I'm still friends with some of the great bloggy ladies I've met recently and can look at pics from our get togethers.

Our walls will still be filled with images of the kids. At that point, the pics will be from their preteen years and hopefully several fun family vacays.

And maybe, by that point, I'll be a baker.

Ten years seems like such a long time away. I can't imagine my kids will ever be those ages (or older!). It's funny, these early days of tantrums and potty training sometimes seem to be such long days. I'll hold on to my days though. As a wonderful Modest Mouse song says "The years go fast and the days go so slow." I know I'll turn around tomorrow and not only will ten years have passed but, twenty and maybe more.

Well, the new episode certainly did not disappoint! I was worried after the hype over the previews all week. You know how it can be when the previews rave about how amazing it will be. Sometimes it's just not.

I was blown away this week. Let me say that there are probably a few spoilers in this next part. If you haven't seen it yet, skip down to today's questions!

This week's flash-sideways with Sayid was interesting and definitely filled with it's "whaaa?" moments. Apparently, in the flash-sideways, Sayid is still a killer and still in love with Nadia. Is his "oil business" talk on the level or a front for something else? Then, heeeeeeeeere's Keamy! Never thought we'd see that jerk again. Glad 'ol Sayid got one over on him! Open the shaking door and who's on the other side? Jin?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

I liked the parallels with the fight that rages in Sayid between good and evil. I'm anxious to see more of his flash-sideways. With only 10 episodes left, I hope they show more of all the flash-sideways stories.

On the island, more shocking events.

Was anyone else bothered by the fact that these temple people were swayed so easily to leave? I know, they were facing certain death but, have some freaking conviction people!

Will we have a cat fight between Claire and Kate? Claire's going to be pissed that Jin lied to her!

I've got to say that I'm so happy that Miles didn't die. I really thought they were going to wipe him out and I'm glad they didn't do it yet.

Oh, that Fake Locke. He's a crafty one! What a charmer. I almost hope he's the good one instead of the bad one because, dangit, I like Locke!

So, the names on the cave ceiling...only one Kwan was there. I'm thinking now that it is Sun. Jin is with Fake Locke and maybe Jacob knew that would happen.

Was it just me or was Sawyer not in the crowd with Fake Locke there at the end? Really, a whole episode without Sawyer? Come on!

Next week's episode looks like it will be a good one. I'm excited to see a Ben story but, surprisingly upset that it seems as though his end is near. I don't know why but, I've always liked Ben. Such an interesting character. Though, if it's a Ben story then maybe we'll get more out of Illana since they are traveling together.

Me? Well, since you asked...

1. In the beginning, the Survivors all took on jobs. Some hunted, some sewed up bullet wounds, some built rescue boats. If you were one of the Survivors, what would your contribution have been?

I would be organizing. I'd organize all the stuff from the plane, organize supplies, be the one taking the census, find paper so I could make lists galore. I'm an organizer and when I feel out of control it is therapeutic for me to organize and make lists and organize my lists and make lists of my lists. I can't help it. So, yeah, I'd organize...and totally make a coconut radio.

2. If you were deserted on an island, what five things would you want with you?

I almost ditched this question because it was actually hard for me to come up with my answers. I'm not completely sold on these but, here's what I've got.
1. A Filtered Water Pitcher - Then it wouldn't matter if you found fresh water
2. A Lighter - Because that whole rubbing two sticks together thing...not happenin'.
3. Pen and Paper - Yeah, that's two things but, it's my game.
4. My favorite book - Something I'd read over and over. Probably The Stand
5. Another person, preferably my hubby - It would suck to be stranded alone. Hubby would be entertaining and totally "Survivorman".

Yeah, still not completely sold on that list but, whatev.

3. What's your favorite movie that takes place on an island?

The Beach. Love it. Leo DiCaprio in wonderful form. Great storyline, great actors, great movie. Seen it a million times and own it. One of hubby's faves as well.

I'm proud to say that I'm a pretty good cook.

My momma taught me well!

She did. My stepmom raised us in a home where we always had a wonderful dinner every night, usually around the same time every day.

Not that she ever really sat me down to say "this is how you cook" but, watching someone come up with different recipes (that she always called concoctions) and eating the yummy food every night really helped me to learn peripherally.

Even the nights that she really took the night off from cooking were fun. When my dad worked shift work, Mom would treat my brother and me with "Little Pizzas". Biscuits flattened out with pizza or spaghetti sauce spread on top, topped with cheese and then baked. My brother and I loved "Little Pizza Night".

Like Mom, I often use recipes and change them up or just make things up as I go along.

I really love to cook.

But

I am NOT a baker.

And, I really don't understand why I can cook a scrumptious meal but, burn muffins.

I don't even have fun when I bake. The whole time, I'm just thinking about how badly I will mess it up.

Not that I don't attempt at times. And sure, there are a few things in my dessert repertoire that are yummy and come out decent tasting. Things that don't require cooking (like my Lemon Pie) and things I've been making for many years (like my Neiman Marcus Cake) generally end up being edible.

Four years ago I decided that I wanted to try a "real" dessert to take to hubby's family's Christmas party.

I was ready.

I found the perfect recipe for a Chocolate Cheesecake.

I was prepared to make the whole thing from scratch. Even went out and bought a springform pan.

I followed the recipe precisely. Checked and rechecked during baking. Did everything perfectly.

It was gorgeous.

A masterpiece.

Decorated for the holiday and looked unbelievably yummy.

I was so proud of myself.

Too proud?

Because Karma....she doesn't like pride.

I made my finishing touches on my beautiful cake in my tiny little kitchen. The kitchen in that apartment had about three inches of counterspace. I had the cake sitting beside the sink and was just about to cover it and be done.

And I got distracted.

As I tend to do.

And started cleaning up.

And hit the garbage disposal switch.

And it was then, my friends, that Karma decided to spit in my face. Via the disposal.

Nasty disposal water went everywhere.

All over my beautiful cake.

Oh, the cuss words that came out of my mouth that day would make a construction worker blush. And, of course it would happen to the dessert I was taking to Hubby's family get together!

I threw the cake away and have rarely attempted baking since that day.

I also never set anything anywhere close to the sink anymore.

Wild Things

Lions and Tigers and Bears!

Um...

Okay...

Not quite.

But,

There were a couple of tigers at the zoo we visited this weekend!

So, how about...

Tigers and Foxes and Otters! Oh my!

On Saturday we decided to take an impromptu trip to my hometown. It's an hour away from where we live now and it's got a cute little zoo that I used to love when I was a kid. It's nice and small. Small enough to do the whole thing in 30 minutes if you want to. They've got some great exhibits and overall The Texas Zoo in Victoria, Texas makes for a fun and inexpensive afternoon.

The kids had a great time. The camera batteries did not. But, hubby was able to get a few great shots before they crapped out.

It was Snappy's first time at a zoo.

TRex used his pointer to help us with the exhibits.

I was happy to be on the other side of the camera and get to have fun with the kids.

They loved the monkeys.

TRex really liked the bird exhibit. I ran out as quickly as I could stood right there with him the whole time! I am terrified of just love birds!

Looking at the alligators. TRex was certain they were fake, even after being told a million times that they were just sleeping.

Snappy loved the tigers. We spent a lot of time at this part. It was amazing how close we were to them.

TRex really liked them too.

My wild things just loved looking at all those wild things!

Ah, the water fountain. Always a source of enjoyment for the kids. I guess I liked them a lot when I was a kid too. This is my fave pic from the day.

Afterwards we scarfed my favorite mexican food with my fam and I got to do a little shopping with my mom and sister in law. Ladies, the clearance section at Old Navy....drool worthy! I scooped up a couple more $3 tops (yes I was there a few weeks ago) and grabbed a nice shirt for the hubby.

It was a fantastic day. Sunny and just the right temperature. The kids had a blast and it was nice to get away.

Um, no. I used to, though. Now that I don't drink anymore, I'm fairly certain that I probably never should have. When i did it, my fave song to do was Son of a Preacherman.

2. What is your favorite coffee drink?

Love me some Iced Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks. But, I make pretty darn good coffee. We like Dunkin Donuts or 8 O'Clock Coffees. I like Hazelnut, Pumpkin Spice and French Vanilla creamers for the house. We drink lots of coffee around here.

3. If you could choose your own name, what would it be?

Hmmmm. I have a hard time picturing people with different names than I know them by and with me, it's even harder. I like Zoey. I could pull off being a Zoey. Hmmm, maybe hubby will let me name our next daughter Zoey. No, not preggers, just always thinking baby names.

4. Were you ever bullied?

Not that I can recall. Which means I have a bad memory or never got bullied or the bully did a really crappy job at it. I do remember being besties with two other girls when I was in elementary school and you know how it is when there are three girls that are friends. One week it would be two against one and the next week it would be the other two against one and so on and so forth. I don't really count that as bulllying though. More like just bitchy little girls.

5. How often do you eat fast food?

Not very often. Hubby's hatred for fast food grows exponentially as the days pass. We did have Chick-fil-A a few days ago but, as fast foods go, it's definitely one of the better ones.
