Good vs. Evil

Those are the words I used to tell my son what The Secret of Kells was about before he started watching it. Of course, for a 6 year old, his eyes got wider and his smile bigger with each of those words. I knew his expectations were up as I put the movie in the player. The Secret of Kells absolutely did not disappoint his wild imagination and high expectations. What surprised me was not how much my son enjoyed this movie but, how my 3 year old daughter was instantly glued to it and wanted to watch it repeatedly for days.

The Secret of Kells is a story of a young boy, Brendan. Set in medieval Ireland, Brendan sets off on an adventure after a "master illuminator" arrives with a book filled with secret wisdom and magical powers. Brendan has to help complete the unfinished magical book. The movie is filled with barbarians, magic, fear conquering and sweet Aisling, a wolf-girl fairy who befriends Brendan on his journey.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that The Secret of Kells was nominated for Best Animated Feature at this year's Academy Awards. I truly think it deserved to win. This is an unbelievable film with amazing animation and a timeless story. I love that my kids are exposed to the Celtic music and mythology that are abundant in the movie and the overlying tones and lessons of the story are classic. I can be positive that this will be a favorite movie in our house for a long time. Plus, it's one of those movies that my kids love and I don't mind watching with them because it is so very entertaining. I definitely recommend The Secret of Kells.
